Advanced Airmanship Secrets

Transcript: Stalls

Stall recognition and recovery needs to be absolutely automatic. Of course the ideal is to avoid stalls altogether except in the very special moment when you're executing a full stall landing.

The secret to stall avoidance it to know why stalls occur so you can avoid those conditions.

None of use can be so cocky as to believe that we fly so well that we will never stall an airplane accidentally. So we need to practice responding instinctively to the onset of a stall.

Some believe that we should practice stall recovery when an airplane's stall warning device activates. But those devices can and have failed resulting in fatal accidents.

I propose that pilots should master recovering from stalls that have just started shacking the stick all the way to well developed stalls.
