Take my NEW Landing SECRETS online course. You will learn all the airmanship you need to land any airplane in any conditions that your airplane can be landed... so you can go anywhere you want, when you want. Turn a six-hour drive into a 30-minute flight; take your kids camping by landing on an isolated Forest Service strip; win the admiration of your neighbors and colleagues. Live the life of your dreams... Simply by Learning my Three-Step Method of Landing.

Dear Student, Sport, Private, Commercial Pilot:

Did you know that you can use exactly the same technique for severe crosswinds as you use on a calm day?

Doesn't it really suck to worry about your next landing?

You ever wonder why the average student pilot needs over 15 hours of flight instruction and others solo in less than 8?

The difference is not natural ability. Pilots who solo quickly are prepared before they get in the cockpit. The slow ones are not. They are reduced to studying in the worse conceivable classroom – a noisy, busy cockpit.  Their instructors have no choice but to fly, look for traffic and talk to the tower BEFORE can they can teach you.

If you needed 12, 15 or more hours to solo and you’re still not satisfied with your landings, it’s not your fault! You just had not been properly prepared for landings.

The secret lies in knowing and understanding the airmanship skills before you are expected to perform them.

The consequences of failing to learn and practice these airmanship skills are ground loops, overshoots, undershoots, wing tip strikes and occasional unplanned trips off the runway.

Here's what Fighter Pilots and Airline Captains Say

Great video.  As a retired navy fighter pilot and airline pilot, I was always amazed how many of my copilots did not try this technique. Many would simply fly in a crab all the way to touchdown or try and kick out the crab with rudder right before touchdown.  I used this technique on my fighters, B-727, B-737 (once in a 40 knot direct crosswind at Midway Airport) and the A-300. This technique works great but I can see why many pilots are afraid of cross controlling close to the ground.

IMO of 50 yrs...EXCELLENT.
The biggest problem I've seen is that there aren't very many good pilots/good instructors.
We should teach control PRESSURES not movement.
Teaching a neophyte to land with flaps (especially with 30-40* on Cessnas) is poor technique. Airspeed changes too rapidly and stalls too abruptly.
Nothing is more negative to a new student than a thump landing.
Teach them to touch down smoothly rather than a thump and they will be more confident and learn more quickly.
Ever wonder how WWII Cub pilots soloed in 5-6 hrs??
Keep up the good explanations.

Thank you, Mr. Daniel. All I hear these days touts the crab-style of landing. I've been a pilot for over 50 years and more than 20,000 hours. I've tried the crab method a couple of times and absolutely did NOT like it. If nothing else, the side loads on the gear made me very uncomfortable. I started flying as a USAF cadet and wound up flying fighters for 27 years. I was taught the cross-control method. Glad to see this video.

Meet Doug Daniel

Doug Daniel has taught pilots who went on to be airline pilots, bush pilots, flight instructors, instrument-rated multi-engine pilots and one who became chief pilot of a commercial hot-air balloon operation.

He and his brother snuck into an abandoned Air Force base to fly a still operational WWII flight simulator. That helped him solo in less than seven hours. That's how he learned the value of knowing what to do before climbing into a cockpit!

Doug learned aerodynamics by working as a mathematician at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory then learned how to explain that arcane subject in layman’s terms by teaching flying before and after work.

He learned the nuts and bolts of airplane ownership as the president of the 10-airplane, 150-member flying club, Flying Particles.

After building and test flying an experimental airplane and writing a pilot’s reference, a 211-page eBook, Flying SECRETS, Doug went on to produce numerous online courses for pilots at all skill levels.

Why am I the guy to help you land smoothly and safely time after time in every condition your airplane can be landed?

Without thinking, some will say, “Because you soloed in six hours and twenty-five minutes.”

After a pause they might say, “Because your students averaged soloing in just two thirds of the national average.”

Let me share the REAL reason with will shock you.

I almost died and my passengers with me because I thought that I knew how to land and didn’t.

I landed at the Nuttree Airport in a Cessna 172. I felt pretty smug. It was a very smooth landing, one of those landings that you could hear but not feel. Then a gust picked me up and set me down on a parallel taxiway facing opposite direction traffic.

Had the gust come from the left, it would have set us in an irrigation ditch, tangled up with the trees next to it. There is no doubt that we could have been killed.

Determined never to let that happen again, I spend a great deal of time analyzing what I did wrong. Once I became an instructor there was no doubt that I would teach my students the right landing habits – habits that would prevent these mistakes.

I became obsessed with landings… soft field landing, rough field landings, high altitude landings, icy runways, oily runways, short runways, crosswinds, gusty crosswinds... I especially needed to understand how a pilot can know to abort a landing before it’s too late?

Once I had that figured out, I needed to teach these techniques without dumping a bunch or extraneous stuff on my students. The techniques must be simple and decision-making instantaneous.

My students started soloing in two thirds of the time of the national average; they were getting their private licenses much quicker.

What was even more satisfying is the instructors that I have trained are having similar results.

Why do Pilots Struggle to make Great Landings?

This is the question I set out to answer when I crafted this program.

I listened to the noise from other experts: that you have to have 1,000 hours before you can really land well, or if you kick the rudder really hard just before you touch down you can straighten the airplane out before it drifts too much, or just let the tires squall, it won't hurt 'em…

But I realized, without the skill set of controlled PGP, consistent approach airspeed and more importantly, precise cross controlling, a pilot would never succeed.

So I looked around and this is what I saw:

  • Airline pilots, Air Taxi pilots, High-Time Private Pilots were thumping, weaving and squalling when they landed.
  • Airline pilots running off the far end of the runway.
  • The National Transportation Safety Board telling us that a full 45% of all landing incidents involve cross winds.

WHY? WHY? WHY?

I’ve ridden in the back of airliners and knew that the pilot did not know how to land in a gentle 10-knot crosswind.

I’ve heard airline captains say that are afraid of cross controlling for fear of wing tip strikes. Yet knowledgeable captains make cross controlled landings in 40 KNOT DIRECT CROSSWINDS.

And I found the answer to my question.

As Elon Musk would say, these people never went back to first principles. They never looked at the basics in enough detail to understand things that apply to every airplane from Piper Cub to A380.

IT'S NOT THEIR FAULT!

Their flight instructors said, “Just do what I do; follow me through on the controls.” Often just trying to build time so they could go to work in the airlines.

No one taught these unfortunate pilots the simple basic techniques that work every time.

So I went to work and packaged all my wisdom into one training that will make a bigger impact in your flying and your life than any system you have ever seen.

The Ultimate Cost of Inaction

I do guarantee a COI, The Cost of Inaction

If you don't act, it could cost you:

  • Botched Landings: Hard landings, bounces, mushes, wingtip strikes, ground loops, over-shoots, under-shoots, going off the side of the runway... (I know; I was certain that it couldn't happen to me until it did.)
  • Time and Money: Additional hours of dual to get each license or rating.
  • Your self respect and dignity.
  • Your reputation.
  • Passenger loyalty.

Ask yourself this question: "When do passengers clap? Is it when you execute a precision instrument approach flawlessly? Is it when you navigate to within 100 yards of your destination? Is it when you keep the ball perfectly centered on every turn throughout a flight?"

You know the answer: None of the above!

Passengers clap when you make a great landing. Landings are how others measure us and we measure ourselves as pilots.
